Crucial Link Story

Below is the timeline to the founding of Crucial Link by CEO Matt Sheets and Director of Sales and Marketing John C. Kolencik.

2012:

A friend invites Matt to join him in starting a staffing company.

2013:

Day Star Staffing was born.

After five months of hard work but little income, Matt received his first big order. That was the turning point. Sales rose so fast in the next five months that Matt brought in 6 figures and bought out his partner.

For the next year, Matt assessed all areas of the company. He adopted better technology and systems and invested time into personal and team development.

2015:

Matt hired John Kolencik of Matrix Impact to help with his people and their sales/marketing efforts, spending time individually and with the team.

The Matt-John combo was magic! Two of the three professional sports teams in Cleveland became customers. In addition, fortune 500 companies, well-known national and regional brands, and small mom-and-pop businesses were all Day Star customers.

John kept sales and marketing moving, while Matt focused on observing and researching the staffing market. He picked up on a pattern of problems permeating the entire staffing market –

People are a company’s most valuable resource, but they are not an infinite resource. The competition was overselling the Ohio metro markets by overpromising and under-delivering on employees. Matt took the contrarian approach. He ensured Day Star educated their customers, helping them understand the root causes of their employment issues instead of simply “throwing the promise of employees” at them. It led to more satisfied long-term customers and laid the foundation for Crucial Link.

2016:

Matt and John are meeting with a large food processing company in Lorain County discussing how to improve their current staffing situation.

John walks the Operations Manager through the 4 step process Day Star is using, each step starting with the letter M. He doodles a 4M with a circle around it in his notes. This is the day the 4M System was formally created.

2018:

Matt and John sold Day Star. They spent the three-year non-competition clause time developing answers for successful staffing.

Now with the non-compete in their rear view window, time, technology, and the 4M System have come together. Matt and John’s vision is reality. They are educating employers and helping them understand the root causes of their employment issues instead of simply “throwing the promise of employees” at them. No more overselling metro markets by overpromising and under-delivering on employees. People are a company’s most valuable resource, but they are not an infinite resource.
